The awarding ceremony of 2012 Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, hosted by Chinese Medical Association and co-organized by Yangtze River Pharmaceutical Group, was held in Beijing on January 27, 2012. A total of 85 awards were presented for research results in medical field, including 8 first prizes, 25 second prizes and 47 third prizes. There were also two prizes for health management, two prizes for medical science popularization and one prize for medical policy.
The Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award was established by Chinese Medical Association and approved by Ministry of Health and Ministry of Science and Technology in 2001. Over the 12 years since its birth, there have been 943 prizes in medical science by the Award, which boosts the innovation by medical workers and the progress in medical science in China, contributing to the rapid development in China's medical and health undertaking. In 2006, the Chinese Medical Association got the approval from the National Science and Technology Awarding Office to recommend National Natural Science Award, Invention Award and Scientific and Technological Progress Award from the first prizes from Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award.
To boost the reform in China's medical and health system, the health policy award was set up in 2012, proposed by Chen Zhu, Minister of Health and Chairman of Chinese Medical Association, and reviewed and approved by the standing council. The first Health Policy Award went to Li Jiange, General Manager of China International Capital Corporation and Vice General Manager of Central Huijin Investment Ltd. Mr. Li was awarded for his in-depth research into the medical problem of farming population and his creative solution of introducing the new village cooperative medical system. He helped lay the theoretical and practical foundation for the building, improvement and implementation of the system, making an extraordinary contribution to the birth and development of new rural cooperative medical system.
The 2013 annual academic conference was held prior to the awarding ceremony. Zhang Mao, Party Secretary-General of Ministry of Health, Liu Qian, Vice Minister of Health, and other leaders attended the ceremony along with Xu Jingren and presented awards to the winners. Zhang Mao addressed the ceremony.
He said awards for science and technological progress played a positive role in leading the scientific and technological development, creating new models for innovation and advancing social and national development. Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award had a sound reputation and was acknowledged by most leaders and researchers in the field of health. He wished researchers could continue to pursue the cause, enhance creditworthy development of research and enhance the ability of innovation. He encouraged young researchers to be bold and innovative. He hoped the Chinese Medical Association could be a key component for boosting the medical science in China, implement the spirit of reforming the state science and technology regime, explore in sci-tech evaluation and award and enhance the credibility of Chinese Medical and Science Award; he hoped the Association could fully capitalize the results of awards, apply the technologies into use and translate the findings into more benefit to the generic public. Zhang also acknowledged Yangtze River Pharmaceutical Group's contribution to the society by supporting China's medical science cause, adhering to the values of "seeking progress all the time and protecting all human beings" and "benefiting the general public through quality products and innovation", producing medicines of premium quality and serving the general public.
